Charities, national and local

It is easy to get confused about the various charities for spina bifida and hydrocephalus in this country but to put it simply, in England, Wales and Northern Ireland there is one national organisation (Shine) which covers the whole area and then there are a number of smaller, local, separate charities covering specific areas like Surrey. The reason this situation exists is largely historical and some local charities have closer links with national Shine than others.

The national charity, Shine, divides the area it covers into 4 regions and Shine Surrey comes under the Southern Region. For details of other local associations in this region please follow this link:

Local Associations in the Southern Region

Alternatively, you may like to go directly to the web sites for other associations in the south: Sussex, Kent, Isle of Wight, and Shine South (Hants, Dorset & Wilts).

If you go north of the border, Scotland is covered by the Scottish Spina Bifida Association (SSBA)

If you wish to find out about associations in other countries, a good start is the International Federation for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus,
